Copy Editing

Copy editing is a distinct skill but one that is often confused with proofreading. However, whilst proofreading is the last activity before a document is considered 'finished' (basically checking for final errors) copy editing involves a more lengthy and considered involvement with a document in its initial stages.  It is often needed by students whose first language is not English, although native speakers will also find it helpful. All the novels and non fiction books that you have on your bookshelves will have initially been passed to a copy editor.

During the process of copy editing, I will check for grammar, punctuation and consistency (proofreading) but also:

* make comments on the use of language in your work * query your phrasing * make suggestions for rewording problematic sentences * help you construct your work so that it reads in a more 'English' way *  discuss your work with you, 1-1 if required (I offer Skype consultations for overseas clients).
